Even though this years cup got cancelled, we still have a lot of energy to plan for 2013. We know that it’s possible to arrange high quality freeride competitions in Norway. The organizers have learned a lot, and will do things different for next year.

Former European Cup alpine skier Tone got the best score in RFC open. We had a small talk with her.

NFC: Hi Tone. Congratulations with first place in RFC open. How do you feel about your performance?

Tone: Quite surprising. Since I’m new to this game, I don’t know my level. Had a good time!

NFC: How was the face and the conditions?

Tone: Varied snow. I think that’s good for me. The face was fun, but had some flat landings. A lot to play with though. Possibilites for speed.

NFC: What’s your strength as a skier?

Tone: The technique I have as a former alpine skier, and my confidence with high speed.

NFC: It’s your first year, and you were planning to ski the whole cup. What do you think about the contests?

Tone: It’s really sad the cup got cancelled. The organizers should have more weather days. I went to Lofoten, Ørsta and Voss. A lot of travelling, but I had a great time. The people are friendly, and I really enjoy to plan a line and think as a freerider. It was fun to just be there.

NFC: Are you gonna compete next year?

Tone: Yes, I really hope so!

The planning for the 2013 season has already started. Honest and constructive feedback from the competitors has given us something to work with. The biggest change will be a more rigid and fair selection of riders.

First, the qualification at Nivane got cancelled due to hard and icy old avalanches. Then the organizers decided to fly all the competitors on top of the spectacular Saudehornet, but it was too windy for the chopper to land. There was unfortunately no other opportunities than to cancel the event.

Now we just have to cross our fingers and get ready for Røldal Freeride.

NFC: You’re a rookie in the freeride scene, and you manage to win your first competition. How did you do that?

Marianne: Well, I sure didn’t expect it, I think it was a great deal of luck. And, for once, being a skier from rainy Bergen had its advantages as I have been skiing a lot in rain and wet snow.

NFC: The next competition is Xfree in Sunnmøre. What’s your plan in these beautiful mountains?

Marianne: To ski hard and have fun! I look forward to it, meeting all the other skiers and get some more experience, there is so much to learn! And there is so much fun to have in the mountains!

NFC: Do you have any advice for girls who are thinking of compete in freeride skiing and snowboarding?

Marianne: Just do it! And expect to be totally pumped at the finish line! I didn’t expect it to be so hard work, so train a little!
