For you?

Norway Freeride is a collection of competitions where the best freeriders on skis and boards in Norway and abroad are participating. To participate you must be 18 years and accept our responsibility statement. Here are some excerpts:

I believe that my ski and snowboard skills makes it safe for me to participate in the competition(s), and I will do my best to ski controlled so as not to expose myself or others at risk.

What is so adequate ski and board skills?

  • You must be confident, comfortable and accustomed to driving in terrain that is from 30 ° and up to 50 °.
  • You must be confident, comfortable and used to run on all different snow conditions – snow, crust, ice, wind-packed, spring snow, etc.
  • You must be able to plan a run in accordance with your skills, from an image and / or visual assessment of a face.
  • You must be able to ski a face you have only seen from below, using rocks, trees etc. as reference points.
  • You should be safe, comfortable and used to get air under your board or skis. A line often involves jumping of rocks and cliffs etc.
  • You should be confident in your own psyche. To stand on top of a “blind” face with number on your chest can be a strong test for the nerves.
  • You should have good knowledge in avalanche rescues and first aid. Although all races have their own security team, it may be you that are the first to an avalanche or an injured friend.

Tips for those considering participating

  • Pretend you’re in a competitive situation when riding in the mountains with friends. Plan lines, create referance points, memorize the line and keep the flow going.
  • Get someone to film you and compare with the films from previous contests. Have you something to come up with?
  • Ask others who have seen you run.

Who is capable?

There are a lot of skiers and snowboarders who really wants to compete. It’s fun that there is high interest in freeride, but unfortunately we do not have room for everybody. In the most popular contests the number of registrants are many times the number of start positions. Each organizer sets up an initial list of the following criteria:

  1. Merits. Results in freeride competitions are the most interesting, while other relevant results are also considered.
  2. Local affiliation. Local heroes have strong cards.
  3. Recommandations. If you know someone in the freeride scene that can recommend your knowledge and skills.

If you think you have what it takes, there is nothing to worry about! Competitions are an incredible opportunity to develop yourself and meet other freeriders. The social freeride scene in Norway is great and inclusive. The feeling of skiing through goal gate after a good run is fantastic! Are you convinced? Please sign up!
